The Anarkali salwaar kameez is back in fashion. And the bridal designers have also adopted this stylish look for their wedding suits. If you do not know what the Anarkali suit is, it is basically an umbrella frock-styled long tunic worn over tight pants. The tunic top is usually heavily embroidered with stones, crystals and other stunning embellishments.

The Anarkali Suits actually has a history behind it! I was surprised to read about this, but it is a rather colorful history. It was apparently named after a famous dancer called Anarkali. The name Anarkali means Pomegranate Blossom. How sweet is that?

Anarkali Salwaar Kameez History

Anarkali ("pomegranate blossom") was a legendary slave girl from Lahore (Pakistan) during the Mughal period. She was a RajNartika. She was a dancer at palace of Great Mughal Emperor Akbar. She was supposedly ordered to be buried alive by the Mughal Emperor Akbar for having an illicit relationship with Prince Nuruddin Salim later to become Emperor Jahangir. Due to the lack of evidence and sources, the story of Anarkali is widely accepted to be either false or heavily embellished. Nevertheless, her story is cherished by many and has been adapted into literature, art and cinema.

The dance called mujra or mujara was famous that time. Famous dancers at palace of Mughal kings dance for entertainment of Mughal kings. So, the dresses were worn by the dancers while mujra dance called as mujra / mujara dresses. Later they got famous by name Anarkali dresses or Anarkali salwar kameez in the remembrance of a great dancer and a passionate lover Anarkali.

Bridal Henna Party Ideas | Mehndi Designs for Indian Wedding

The Mehndi (henna) is one of the most important and fun pre-wedding rituals in an Indian wedding. The henna party is celebration of relaxation, friendship, culture, music, usually for the close female relatives and friends of the bride.

A professional henna artist will create intricate designs on the bride's hands and feet. Female guests at the henna party may also get simpler designs done by the henna artist's assistants.

The henna (mehndi) that is applied on the bride is temporary, and not permanent. Henna powder is mixed with essential oils and lemon juice to create a paste. The paste is then applied to the skin and left to dry, undisturbed, for 1-3 hours. After the paste scrapes off, the Henna tattoo will proceed to darken over the next 24 to 48 hours. Henna stains the top couple layers of the skin, and it fades as these layers naturally exfoliate.

Bridal Henna Party Ideas

1) Choose an outfit that is easy to remove without runing your wet henna designs.
A sari with a tie-up choli is a popular choice.

2) Have music at your party. Ask some of your girlfriends to perform a dance, or song for you and your guests.

3) Cater food for the party in advance - do not only have finger food. Ideally, the henna is done in the evening, so plan on catering food for dinner. Be sure to have adequate drinks on hand.

4) Decorations is also a key item to think about. Try theme decorations - Indian style or otherwise. Something that creates warm and inviting atmosphere would be a great idea.

The ceremony is mostly held at bride's place or sometimes in a banquet hall on the eve of the marriage ceremony or few days before the marriage. On this occasion a professional henna designer or some relative applies mehendi to the bride's hands and feet. There are few places in India where it is a ritual that the first motif of henna or mehendi is applied by the bride's sister-in-law whereas there are some places where the first mehendi motif is said to be auspicious if applied by bride's mother.

The bride is dressed in light color clothes with light jewelry. According to the custom the bride must not step out of the house after the mehendi ritual until the wedding day. It is believed that the darker and deeper the henna stains the more the husband and the in-laws will love her bride. The ritual of mehendi signifies the strength and power of love in a marriage so it is regarded good omen for the would-be bride. It is said that the long the bride retains the mehendi, the more auspicious would be her future.

Indian Bridal Make-Up Inspirational Ideas and Tips

An Indian bride typically adorns her hands and feet with henna (mehendi) a day before her wedding. She has her bridal make-up done on the day of the wedding itself.

I have heard of brides choosing their make-up artist by recommendations of relatives and friends, based on word of mouth. That is a very dangerous way of picking a make-up artist. Just because a relative or a friend had a good experience with that particular make-up artist, it does not mean you would also similarly have a positive experience. Too often, brides end up with make-up that is not at all suited for them. But since it is done on the day itself, there is no option to change make-up artists or have them try something new - what if the something "new" was worse?!

Therefore, it is always a good idea to have a make-up session with your make-up artist before the wedding day. This allows you to observe the make-up artist at work, point out what you like and what you don't. For photography and the like, make-up artists prefer to use cream foudations for the face. When you are using a cream-based cosmetic foundations, the concealer can be applied before or after the foundation. The make-up artist will use a wedge-shaped latex sponge and light strokes to apply the foundation across the face. The thicker and heavier the foundation feels, the more it covers. So if it feels slightly dry to the touch, the it offers light to medium coverage. But be careful when using cream foundations; first you have to find one that matches your skin tone. Too light foundations will make you look washed out in your wedding photos.

Indian brides usually have their feet adorned with elaborate henna designs for their weddings (see picture on the left). No doubt you will be doing so too.

Nevertheless, you will still need to get complementary shoes suitable for your wedding outfit - wedding saree or wedding lehnga - for your studio photo shoots, the wedding reception and dance parties after your traditional Indian wedding ceremony (that is often performed on a stage with bride and bridegroom bare-footed).

Here are some ideas that will help you get started on your hunt for the perfect wedding shoe. Keep in mind that in addition to beauty of the shoe, you will need to test it for comfort as well. You will be wearing the shoes for extended periods of time, and it is essential that you find comfortable shoes. You do not want your feet to ache a few hours into your wedding day!

Black is suitable because it is easily matched with a variety of colours. When in doubt, do go for black. Since most traditional Indian wedding dresses are in red tones, black colour as a wedding shoe is ideal and complementary.

A lot of our readers are bride-to-bes, and while most bridegrooms do not spend much time researching the type of clothes they will be wearing on their wedding day, I thought it would be a good idea to have some articles that focused on the bridegroom because the brides will be doing the research for them!

So here is an article that contains some ideas for bridal sherwani for the bridegroom.

The sherwani is a long coat-like top that is worn with pants. Although the sherwani a national dress for Pakistan, it is also a popular choice for most bridegrooms all over South Asia, especially in India.

When picking a sherwani for the bridegroom, it would be best to pick something that is complementary to the bride's wedding outfit. I have noticed that bridal boutiques do not sell matching - his and hers - wedding outfits. So it is imperative that the bride and bridegroom coordinate their wedding outfit shopping. Or simply let the bride take charge of it all!

Blue Galore

For some reason, blue is not a popular colour for wedding outfits in South Asia. But I think blue is a great choice, such as these in the pictures.

Traditional Reds

Red is a traditional colour for wedding outfits in South Asia. Having embroidery work on the sherwani coat, as in the picture on left, is a great way to make the outfit stand out.

Ivory and Whites

Sherwanis can come in three pieces. The one on the right has an inner vest piece that is red in colour and the tunic coat is in white. Excellent way to add some colour to the outfit without having it overwhelm the overall look. This would be nicely paired with a bride's red wedding outfit.

The ivory sherwani on the left is covered with exquisite silver embroidery work. Nice choice indeed.

Wedding Lehnga Colour and Design Ideas

In South Asia, the traditional colour of choice for the bride's wedding dress is red. Brides wear the bridal saree or the bridal lehnga (a two-piece top and skirt outfit, see picture on the left) on their wedding day. Some brides wear the lehnga on their engagement and a saree on their wedding day. While others wear both on their wedding day, choosing to have multiple change of outfits through the day.

Whatever the choice - be it the saree or lehgna - most South Asian brides will choose the traditional red colour for their wedding outfits. But a few brides are breaking tradition by picking wedding lehnga outfits of a different colour. This trend has been helped by Bollywood films - those of you who follow the Bollywood films will notice the actresses wearing a hue of colours (not red!) for their scenes involving weddings.

So in light of this new trend, I have compiled a few wedding lehngas that are anything but red! I hope you gain some inspiration from the compilation for your own weddings.

Purple The Colour of Royalty

The colour purple has been associated with royalty from the times of the Roman Empire, Ancient China to Medievial Europe. Today, the colour is favoured by many people because the colour in human psychology is still associated with royalty, regality, and nobility.

This purple coloured wedding lehnga is exquisite - exudes a regal look for any bride wanting a spectacular wedding event.

Sea-Green Pleasing Colour

Instead of the dupatta in the picture though, I would encourage looking for a more heavily embroidered duppata, which would set off the simplicity of the ivory wedding lehnga.

Shimmering Blue Colour

Blue is the color of the sky and the ocean, and exudes peace and tranquility. It is the opposite of red. Blue as a choice of wedding lehnga is not very popular in South Asia. In fact, I had a hard time finding a bridal lehnga that was blue. However, I think blue is a great colour for a wedding outfit. If one is bucking the trend, then why not blue? This lehnga has beadwork and embroidery. I would prefer it more with three quartered sleeves.

Fit For A Bride - Exercise Shape-Up Tips

You've planned for the wedding dress, the caterers, the flowers, the wedding decoration and so on. But have you planned for yourself - here are some tips on how to make sure you look your best on your wedding day!

Here are three of my favourite exercises that can help you shape up for the big day - focus is on the upper back and the area under the arms, the shoulders, and the core region.

Incline Lateral Raise

This exercise works the middle shoulder area, so you will look good in an off-shoulder wedding gown.

How to do it: Holding a dumbbell in your right hand (1) rest the left side of your body on a fitball (or any stable surface that inclines about 30 degrees), right leg in front of the left. Keeping the abdominal region tight to protect the back and to ensure that you don't use momentum, raise the dumbbell till your right arm is perpendicular to the torso. (2) Keep the elbow slightly bent throughout the exercise. Return to start and repeat. Do three sets of 15 to 20 repetitions on each side.

Boat Pose

This exercise tones the abdominal muscles, which will make you look trim in most styles of wedding gowns, particularly those fitted at the waist, like a corset wedding gown.

This exercise is also good for the digestive and hormone systems, and relieves tension.

How to do it: Lie on the floor with knees bent and feet on the floor. (1) Inhale, hold your breath and raise your chest (2) and raise your feet off the floor. (3) Keeping your spine long and shoulders relaxed, breathe normally and hold this position for between five and 10 counts. Exhale and return to the start position. Do 10 repititions.

Dumbbell Pullover

This exercise tones the area under the arms, firms the upper back and makes you look great in off-shoulder, bustier or low-back gowns.

How to do it: Lie on the bench with feet on the floor. Hold a dumbbell in the palms of both hands, with the thumbs surrounding the handle, (1) and extend the arms over your head. Inhale and lower the dumbbell behind your head, bending the elbows slightly. (2) Exhale, and return to the start position. Start with four sets of 15 repetitions and gradually build up to four to five sets of 15 to 20 repetitions.

This is also an elegant look for your formal wedding dinner.

This wedding hairstyle will work best with medium length hair. If your hair is long and thick, the curls may not keep in place, so a different hairstyle would be more appropriate.

Spanish Updo Wedding Hairstyle

Here is a technique for a facial massage that you can do yourself at home. Do this after you cleanse your skin.

Facial massages are believed to ease the muscle tension in the face and improve blood circulation. The following are some tips on how to give yourself a facial massage.

1. Get yourself a facial massage oil that is suitable for your skin type. Half (2.5 ml) to one teaspoon (5 ml) of oil should be enough for a 5-minute facial massage.

2. Start at the base of your throat, and use gentle upward and outward strokes to progressly slide movements along your jawline to the base of your ears. Then use circular motions with your fingertips over your cheeks and ears and around your lips.

3. Next, lightly tap around the eyes with your fingertips. Start at the outer edge and work inwards.

4. Starting at the center of your forehead, use upward strokes to work your way outward with each hand, ending with circular strokes over your temples.

5. Repeat this procedure up to 5 times. There is no need to rinse your face, as the massage oil should be left to completely absorb into your skin.

The skin repairs itself at night by replacing dead skin cells with fresh new ones. Making sure your skin absorbs enough nutrients during the night is vital. It will revitalize your facial skin and works wonders on skin that has been exposed to all the dirt and grime of the daytime. You should also apply the treatment to your arms and neck area.

Nourish Your Skin From Within

Applying external creams is always good. But it is also important to nourish the skin from within. Ginger tea is often given to clients at spas after facials and body massages. You can prepare your own ginger tea at home, and have some after your facial cleansing and moisturising treatment. It refreshes you from within. Ginger tea has a spicy and invigorating taste. It is also useful as it has healing properties; it can act as a remedy for indigestion, nausea, and to ward off colds, flu, and sore throats.

Ginger Tea Recipe

Water, 4 cups
2-inch piece of fresh ginger root
optional: honey and lemon slice

Peel the ginger root and slice it into thin slices. Bring the water to a boil in a saucepan. Once it is boiling, add the ginger. Cover it and reduce to a simmer for 15-20 minutes. Strain the tea. Add honey and lemon to taste.

You can also add black, or green tea to the above, if you so desire.
